A friend asked me today… What are the things in this world that I find beautiful, what makes me tick? It was a good question; one that I am sure will not be discovered for some time, though as I thought about this, I gained some insight on the subject.
Maybe you would like to call it faith or hope or trust, but we are all driven by it. Our thoughts and actions based on logic are dependent on the hope that we will live to see another day and maybe pass on our knowledge. For example, our choices to go to school to learn new things are driven by the hope that that knowledge will be useful later and ultimately dependent on the hope that there will be a later. Our thoughts and actions based on ethics are driven by the faith that there is life after death or at least something after death. For example, we believe may try to live a life that is pleasing to God because of faith in God. Lastly, our thoughts and actions based on emotion, what are they driven by? Maybe it is driven by the hope in tomorrow that we may live through another’s life. For example, we share our life with another so that when we die, we may live in the hearts of others. But if this is true, it is not an emotion of love, rather an emotion of selfishness. So what drives us to act on emotions? Maybe it is the hope that we can show others love and ultimately show them how to show love to others.
So this is one piece of the answer to my friend’s question… Hope, faith, trust, belief, these make me tick, make me live.
