Mud and Clay

Today I came across an intriguing question as I edited my blogger profile and though it seemed like a simple question at first glance, but when studied more thoroughly, it has meaning beyond definition.

If mud is dirt plus water, what is clay?

Mud: Water soaked soil
Clay: Moist sticky earth; mud

The difference in the two has little to do with the composure of compounds but rather the essence of purpose. Mud has little more purpose than to be mud. It is dirt wet with cloudy water. It holds no shape or form, for an extended period of time at least. It is dirty and will become nothing but perhaps dirt again. Clay on the other hand, is ready to be molded, accepting shape and form. And when it follows its purpose, it becomes something beautiful that serves a greater good.

As the mud is full of confusion, so are our hearts in this lost and lonely world. Let our hearts be made from mud to clay in allowing God to mold us. Let us be willing to be made into clay that we are willing to be shaped and formed by God. May the cloudy, confusing life we are living be changed into purposeful life, life that will be created into something beautiful, life that serves not itself but others.
